Grimsby has once again taken centre stage in the UK’s seafood and culinary sector, as the Grimsby Institute officially launched the 29th National Seafood Chef of the Year competition at a special industry event held at its Samphire Restaurant.
The launch brought together local employers, seafood specialists, and industry leaders to celebrate the competition’s legacy and encourage new sponsorship to support the next generation of culinary talent.
Guests were treated to a three-course lunch, expertly prepared and served by the Grimsby Institute’s hospitality students, showcasing the skills the competition is designed to nurture.
Speakers included Chris Wood, Head of Hospitality at the Grimsby Institute, and Competition Director Carrieanne Vaughan, who highlighted the national impact of the competition in developing young chefs and promoting seafood excellence.
Chris Wood said the competition reflects Grimsby’s “long-standing commitment to developing talent, supporting industry, and championing the food and hospitality sector,” adding that seafood remains “deeply rooted in Grimsby’s heritage and continues to define its future.”
Now in its 29th year, the competition has become a nationally recognised platform for trainee chefs, challenging them to demonstrate creativity, technical skill, and a deep understanding of seafood. Finalists compete live in Grimsby under the scrutiny of leading industry judges.
Carrieanne Vaughan emphasised the wider impact of the competition, not only on participants but on the town itself: “By bringing together colleges, chefs, suppliers, and industry leaders from across the UK, we are putting Grimsby firmly on the map as a hub for innovation, skills, and culinary excellence.”
The event also celebrated emerging local talent, with special guests from Cambridge Park Academy, whose students recently won the Junior Seafood Chef competition, demonstrating the strength of the region’s future pipeline.
Grimsby Institute is looking for to businesses and partners across the seafood and hospitality sectors to support the competition through sponsorship, helping to create real-world opportunities for aspiring chefs and strengthen the industry’s future.
The National Seafood Chef of the Year competition continues to play a vital role in showcasing Grimsby’s seafood heritage while positioning the town as a leading centre for culinary education and innovation.
